Did you know that the "Mop" as we know it today was invented by an African-American inventor by the name of Thomas Stewart, back in 1893? He was awarded a patent for his mop invention: Patent Number 499,402 on June 13, 1893. Jacob Howe was probably the first known inventor of the mop as he registered a patent for a mop handle in 1837.
Surely there were mops in use prior to that but his mop was different because the head was made from yarn, you could rinse it and wring it out, and you could remove the mop head and replace it with another. He took the mop to a whole new level and this made it easier to clean which meant it was now much healthier for your houshold. And by being able to replace the mop head it not only was a more functional mop, but also a more cost-effective mop since you didn't have to replace the entire mop, handle and all, once it was too dirty to use.
There are basically two types of mops. A wet mop and a dry (dust) mop.

All About Mops
And just in case you don't know- a mop is a special tool consisting of a handle and a head (brush) that is used to clean floors!
There are many types of mops in the marketplace today but there is only one we can find in our research that is probably the only mop a person would ever need. It's called the SH-Mop or Shine Mop and it's design covers about any purpose a person can think of for mopping a hardwood floor including a 360 degree swivel head and replaceable mop head. A mop isn't just for cleaning floors anymore as a good mop like this one can be used to clean walls and celiings too.
We mention the sh-mop because it is the original design of this type of mop and is the most copied style of mop today. For more information on the sh-mop you can visit www.safehomeproducts.com they carry an extensive line of environmentally friendly products for the home, including the sh-mop and sh-mop kits.
Did you know that MOP can also mean:
Maintenance Operation Protocol, Muriate Of Potash, Manual Of Practice, Method Of Production, Measure Of Performance, Mother Of Pearl and dozens of other things???
None of these MOPs will clean your floors however!
The most commmonly used mopping term is probably:
"Swab the floors"!
All About Mops is just another tongue-in-cheek production provided by someone with an Internet sense of humor, too much time on their hands, a curiosity about mops and a shine mop in their hands.
We believe the sh-mop is probably the best mop on the market- it's also the most widely copied design- that's why this site url has been named after it and why we have recommended a site that provides information on on it.
In 1956 Manuel Jalón Corominas, developed a handle (wooden stick) with a cleaning cloth and a bucket attachment (colander). This was the first mop that you could wring on the spot and most mop and buckets copy this style today.
The wet mop, dry mop, sh-mop (shine mop) and just about any other type of mop you can think of are designed to make the task of cleaning a floor healthier, easier and less strenuous. In the old days, we had to get down on our hands and knees and scrub with a brush or rag. Some things do get better in time and the SH Mop is the mop of choice!
